Rockhopper Penguin
Eudyptes chrysocome (Rockhopper Penguin) from Dictionnaire Universel D'histoire Naturelle (1841-1849, 2nd edition 1861) by Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny (1806–1876).Â
The Eastern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome filholi), also known as the tawaki piki toka, is a subspecies of the Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) found in subantarctic regions and the Indian Ocean. It has distinctive pink margins around its bill and is one of the smallest crested penguins. In New Zealand it breeds on subantartic islands such as the Antipodes islands and Campbell Island and builds its nest on rocky slopes near the coastline.
